Education is a key to helping people to read and understand more about the truth. Our literacy classes encourage dialogue and personal growth as well as advance people in their academic skills. 

Our basic Literacy methodologies assist teachers in their education of children and adults. Teachers and tutures who take the Basic Literacy Training are able to teach adults to read and write in Englsh.

The value of Adult education is in the empowerment of the individual in personal development, encouraging growth in skills through personal interest and allowing discussion to challenge personal thinking. An educated adult will grow in their confidence and become a better citizen in their country. 

In Liberia adult education has been an non-issue and it cost the country a war. The education of  the interior population, which began in earnest in the 1970’s was too little to late. Even today, options for older students makes education difficult to attain. Young people in the interior must leave home and travel to the city for an education. Adults seeking an education are forced into schools with children sometimes half their size.

Adult education means understanding the recent history of the nation but not forgetting the unique past of the country.  Why are the students where they are today? What has held them back from improving their own lives and the lives of their families. It is important to have a dialogue to help people within their own culture. There is a lot in culture that can be harmful, like suppression of women and practice of certain rituals, but until you know who you are and where you come from, you will never understand the need for change.

Illiteracy is a road block to learning and growth and is not limited to English language learning. Every dialect in Liberia has a written language and yet we still have high levels of non-literate adults. Learning in ones own language strengthens the mind's capacity for success.
