Bill & Sandi McGladdery, residents of Abbotsford and members of the ICMS team, decided awhile ago to make a “bucket list.” On this list was “travel to Liberia.” Coming for three weeks was a gift the McGladdery’s gave Liberia. Their time here was a special blend of encouragement and using their skills and abilities to support local needs.
Bill is a very versatile guy. He is trained as a minister, but also is a qualified electrician. I appreciated his art designs that he did with pipe for his electrical wires.
He was able to set up light and electrical fixtures in our community center. Sandi his wife was his assistant and claimed to know all his quirky ways with bending pipes and wiring.
Sandi is a nursing instructor and we asked her to do a health assessment of Pelilewe Village, where we had installed a well in January.
Bill and Sandi, along with Frieda, a friend who is part of Trinity Dental Clinic, Lillie Ann, our Registrar for the community center and James as the guide and interpreter made the trip in one day.
We still do not have an accurate count of numbers in the village but we do have some ideas of their health now.
Frieda saw about 48 dental patients. Sandi saw 37. Everyone was weighed and measured for height and then they did a small assessment for critical health conditions.
Over all, the health in the village was good. One interesting find is that the girls are bigger and healthier than the boys. There was one newborn who was under 4 pounds, but was nursing and growing. There were a couple cases of malnutrition but the health team was happy with their general results.
